The proposal to widen the State highway linking to Ramagundam and Karimnagar was taken a year ago with a flurry of letters exchanged between government and the Defence authorities on seeking permission for acquiring land. Six-laning proposed The plan was to widen the stretch up to six lanes of about 150ft -200 ft. At least 10 km of the highway passes through Defence lands, including properties belonging to the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force from S.P . Road to Hakimpet. The Roads & Buildings Department has been entrusted with the task but after contacting the Defence Estate authorities here and also taking part in a joint survey, the work has not proceeded further. The survey has found that 95 acres of land belonging to the Defence Ministry was required for widening besides private land. According to Defence Estate Officer S. Balakrishna, a board of officers will be constituted to discuss the land to be given for widening and their recommendations will be sent to the Defence Ministry. It is up to the Ministry to decide on modalities of compensation to be sought from the government, whether the land is to be given on lease or any monetary reimbursement.
