Greater Hyderabad

Andhra Pradesh government has decided to annex 12 municipalities of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad with a view to turn the twin city into Greater Hyderabad.  After merging 12 municipalities into one, the greater Hyderabad’s municipal corporation would join the list of big cities such as Mumbai and Delhi.  Earlier, the order was initially issued in July 2005 but the Supreme Court issued a stay as some of the political parties had filed a case against the decision. The political parties had a worry to lose the political strength in the twin city. Now, the Supreme Court has rejected the plea to interfere into the matter, the AP government has passed the GO 261 that is related to the creation of Greater Hyderabad.

However, eight other near-by villages are not in GO that were likely to be added in the area of Greater Hyderabad. Including the eight villages, the total area of Greater Hyderabad would be more than 800 sq km. In the practice to improve the infrastructure of Greater Hyderabad, the Congress government has given the approval to invest Rs 800 crore in development projects. Further, Rs 8,400-crore has been also approved for the development of Mass Rapid Rail Transit System that is likely to start in the coming three months. The government has also approved Rs 2,000-crore for revamping city’s sewerage network, and Rs 5,000-crore to develop Outer Ring Road network. The work on these projects has been started.

The recognition of a mega city would bring more Central funds for the development of the city and for operational purpose, the New Delhi model of having a corporation and a metropolitan council could be followed, he suggested.

The move would usher in a more focused administration for the city and the sprawling suburbs, he maintained. The MCH Standing Committee Chairman and Congress leader, D. Mohan, noted the Greater Hyderabad status would get the city A1 status.
